DFPI News & Updates

New Consumer Protection Laws Effective 2026 

We're strengthening consumer protections through these recently signed bills:

AB238 – Gives additional mortgage relief support to homeowners affected by the LA wildfires.  
SB362 – Improves small business lending transparency.
SB825 – Strengthens protections for California consumers.  

Consumer Alerts & Enforcement Actions

Companies posing as California-licensed debt collection entities – We issued a Consumer Alert informing consumers about CCG & Associates and EZ Loan posing as debt collectors. These entities are not licensed by the DFPI and are not affiliated with CCG Continental Commercial Group, a licensed debt collector.

Sham Letter Impersonating the DFPI – We issued a Consumer Alert warning consumers about a scam involving sham letters and emails impersonating the DFPI. The letter requested a “security deposit” for activities related to cryptocurrency asset mining. This letter did not originate from the DFPI and appears to be part of a phishing scam.

The holidays are a season for giving. Most nonprofit organizations raise funds ethically. Unfortunately, scammers can take advantage of our generosity by creating fake charities that steal donations and personal information. Before donating, make sure your donations are going to genuine organizations. Check the California Registry of Charities and Fundraisers to verify credentials. Whether you donate in person, online, or on your mobile phone, avoid scams by following these charitable donation tips from the California Attorney General’s Office.
