New commissioner appointment – Governor Gavin Newsom appointed KC Mohseni as DFPI Commissioner on Feb. 7, where he has served as Acting Commissioner since Dec. 31, 2024. He served as DFPI’s Chief Deputy Director since 2023. Mohseni has demonstrated a strong commitment to public service throughout his career, holding executive leadership positions at several California state departments before joining the DFPI.
Our Crypto Scam Tracker database more than doubled in 2024 – Before you invest in crypto, search our directory of scam reports. We’ve recently identified several new schemes, detailed on our website.
We’re moving! – Our Sacramento Headquarters is moving to the new May Lee State Office Complex. Starting Mar. 10, consumers choosing to submit their complaints in writing need to mail them to: 651 Bannon Street, Suite 300, Sacramento, CA 95811.
National Slam the Scam Day – We're supporting the Social Security Administration and the Office of the Inspector General for National Slam the Scam Day on Mar. 6. Please join us, as part of National Consumer Protection week, as we work to raise public awareness of government imposter scams.
Consumer Alerts & Enforcement Actions
GSPartners settlement – Californians who deposited money or crypto with GSPartners are now eligible for a refund. Submit a claim by May 22, 2025.
Patelco cybersecurity action – We announced a consent order with Patelco Credit Union, one of California’s largest credit unions, for cybersecurity violations.
Fraudulent website www.mainspringcapitalltd.com – This imposter website is fraudulently marketing itself as Mainspring Capital Management LLC, which is a California-licensed investment advisor.
Wildfire scams and fraud – We issued a consumer alert urging consumers and investors to be aware of mortgage-related scams and fraud.
Block, Inc. multi-state settlement – We announced a coordinated action with 47 state financial regulatory agencies against Block, Inc. The settlement plan includes an $80 million penalty to the state agencies.
Edward Jones multi-state settlement – We joined a $17 million multi-state settlement with investment adviser and broker-dealer, Edward D. Jones & Co., L.P. (Edward Jones).
Scammers are impersonating the IRS and texting taxpayers to request sensitive information, with the false allure of an “Economic Impact Payment.” This is a scam to steal personal data. Be wary of IRS imposters and do not respond to any requests for personal or financial information by text.
