Consumer financial protection commissioner appointment – Armen Meyer is DFPI's new Senior Deputy Commissioner of Consumer Financial Protection. Meyer will oversee functions related to emerging fintech products, debt collectors, student loan companies, and digital financial assets.

2024 activities under the CCFPL – We announced the 2024 Annual Report on the California Consumer Financial Protection Law (CCFPL) highlighting increases in investigations, enforcement actions, and consumer outreach under one of the nation’s most comprehensive consumer financial protections laws.

Aid for homeowners recovering from recent disasters – Applications for the CalAssist Mortgage Fund are now open. This relief is available to low- to middle-income families whose homes were destroyed or left uninhabitable by a disaster such as the LA wildfires.

Checks sent to Prehired victims following pressure from DFPI – We announced that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is providing $4.2 million in long-delayed restitution to victims of predatory tech sales program, Prehired after DFPI and several other states pressed for answers.

As of May 12, the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees took effect. The Rule says that anyone selling tickets to live events — like concerts or sporting events — or offering short-term lodging — like hotel rooms or vacation rentals — has to be upfront about the fees they charge. That means no hidden charges. The price you see upfront must include all fees that the seller knows about. And if there are other fees applied — like taxes or shipping — the seller must tell you before taking your final payment.
